At first glance technology in healthcare is often associated with the dizzying array of devices that come standard in patient rooms, or giving a world-class surgeon the ability to operate on a patient on the other side of the world via robot. What’s just as important, however, is the behind the scenes technology – the data management and storage infrastructure – that enables the delivery of information to these devices and facilitates student learning. After all, what use is an online course if a student can’t login because the backend IT can’t manage the workloads?
One healthcare organization that has invested in its data management infrastructure to support patient outcomes is University Medical Center, New Orleans (UMC). With a commitment to delivering exceptional patient-centered care and a world-class academic experience through advanced research and innovation, UMC has made it a priority to invest in a state-of –the-art IT infrastructure. However, its CIO also saw the opportunity to leverage this IT investment to help manage operational costs, which could have quickly ballooned when you consider that UMC it a 2.3 million square foot campus that is both a patient care and research facility.
One of the most important elements in delivering quality healthcare, especially in a facility the size of UMC, New Orleans is ready access to electronic medical records (EMR). In being able to access patient data quickly doctors and other medical personnel can collaborate on patient care and determine the best course of treatment instantaneously through mobile devices, as well desktops. However, as patient data becomes more rich and complex – think 3D scans and high-definition color images – traditional data storage infrastructure is often overwhelmed. Without instant access to vital records, images, and results, medical personnel are hampered in their ability to see the full scope of a patient’s needs. Moreover, at a time when patient records are the most valuable data for hackers and as medical facilities are subject to ransomware attacks, these records must be secured in transit and at rest.
To ensure that its EMRs were both highly available and secure, UMC chose to deploy FlexPod Datacenters with All Flash FAS to host its Epic EMR and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). This combined solution ensures both speed and security for Epic records as they are used by the thousands of clinicians working at UMC, New Orleans. One data point of note is that UMC documented an 81 percent reduction in response time within Epic, meaning that caregivers can response more quickly to patients with up-to-date information.
The other benefit that UMC identified following implementation of the solution is that copying its production database can now be done in 20 minutes, as compared to 16 hours with its previous storage infrastructure. For healthcare organizations, this speed to backup is vital in combatting ransomware attacks since they are able to backup data more quickly and more frequently ensuring that a complete patient record is always available and health outcomes are not compromised in the event of an attack.
