Traditional storage solutions for federal customers have often been complicated and costly due to the enormous amounts of sensitive data that agencies need to store and maintain.  However, as data changes from something that is stored, to something that is used, retrieved, processed, analyzed, and applied many times before it’s consigned to an archive, the way storage is defined — and priced — must change too.

In response to this growing need for more scalable storage options, NetApp has brought to market a pay-as-you-go data management solution for public sector organizations.   What NetApp’s data-driven team learned from listening to their public sector customers is that most agencies have very different data management needs and that these needs fluctuate based on mission-critical project needs.

Rather than locking public sector customers into contracts that over-serviced their needs, or penalized the agency for needing more capacity on occasion, the team designed a solution that fit their customers’ needs more precisely.  Using a data-driven model that looks at performance and capacity together it’s possible to identify, manage, and deliver a scalable solution.

With this model, agencies can scale up to augment the base amount of storage provided on day one with additional buffer capacity to handle usage spikes and future growth. There are no wasted resources, since users only pay for services procured. For example, while agencies are managing the cloud environment on-premise, NetApp monitors and reads the data usage on the backend and agencies are then invoiced based on terabytes of capacity used and latency.
